FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do you recommend waterproofing?

Water penetration can cause corrosion of steel reinforcements within structural elements, reducing the load-bearing capacity of a building. Over time, moisture leads to concrete cracking, deterioration, and structural damage.

Proper waterproofing not only protects the structural integrity of a building but also prevents mold, bacteria growth, and unhealthy indoor conditions. It ensures a safe, durable, and comfortable living environment by eliminating leaks from roofs, foundations, and wet areas.

  • What is Bituminous waterproofing membrane?

Bituminous waterproofing membranes are protective materials produced by modifying bitumen with polymer-based additives. They may be manufactured with or without reinforcement (such as polyester felt or fiberglass) to enhance mechanical strength and durability.

  • What are the usage areas of bituminous waterproofing membranes?

Bituminous membranes are used in areas exposed to water infiltration, including:

    • Foundations and basement walls
    • Retaining walls
    • Terraces and balconies
    • Flat and pitched roofs
    • Wet areas (bathrooms, WC, kitchens)
    • Water tanks, artificial lakes, and pools
    • Highways, bridges, viaducts, and railway systems
    • Parking decks and industrial flooring

They provide reliable waterproofing in both residential and large-scale infrastructure projects.

  • What is the usage purpose of reinforcement in bituminous waterproofing membranes?

Reinforcement materials such as polyester felt or fiberglass increase the tensile strength and mechanical resistance of membranes. They help the system withstand structural movements, thermal expansion, and building stress.

  • Is it possible to make application of bituminous water proofing membranes without using emulsion as primer?

Primer is highly recommended. It prepares the surface by eliminating dust and loose particles, enhancing adhesion between the membrane and the substrate. Proper priming ensures long-term waterproofing performance.

  • What is the economic life of bituminous water proofing membranes?

When correctly selected and professionally applied, high-quality bituminous membranes can perform throughout the service life of the building. The lifespan largely depends on product quality, application method, and environmental conditions.

  • Can we get definite solution for waterproofing by using bituminous water proofing membranes?

Yes — provided the correct membrane type is selected for the application area and supported with appropriate accessories and professional workmanship.

  • Are bituminous water proofing membranes sufficient alone for the water proofing?

Bituminous membranes provide primary waterproofing protection. However, a complete system may also include accessories such as drainage systems, ventilation components, and pressure bars to ensure optimal performance.

  • Is getting waterproofing application expensive? How much does it cost?

Waterproofing cost depends on building design, application method, and project scale.

In new constructions, waterproofing typically represents approximately 1–3% of the total building cost. However, the cost of repairing water damage is significantly higher. Applying waterproofing during construction is far more economical than retrofitting after completion.

  • Is it deformable to carry the bituminous waterproofing membrane rolls in horizontal position for the material?

No. Rolls must be transported and stored in an upright position. Horizontal storage may cause deformation and affect application performance.

  • Are bituminous waterproofing membranes resistant to UV sunlight?

Mineral-coated and aluminum foil-coated membranes are UV resistant. Other membrane types require protective layers such as screed, concrete, or protective sheets.

  • Do bituminous waterproofing membranes achieve thermal heating?

No. Bituminous membranes are waterproofing materials and do not provide thermal insulation.

  • Do mineral coated bituminous waterproofing membranes fade over time?

High-quality mineral granules are UV resistant and maintain their color. Environmental dust or pollution may affect appearance over time, but the granules themselves do not fade easily.

  • Do bituminous membranes melt in warm weathers?

No. Bituminous membranes are designed to withstand typical climate temperatures. While slight softening may occur in extreme heat, they do not melt under normal weather conditions.

  • Are bituminous membranes applied on only concrete surfaces?

They are commonly applied on concrete and wood surfaces. With proper preparation, application on other substrates is also possible.

  • What should be paid attention after the application of bituminous waterproofing membranes?
    • Avoid cutting or perforating the membrane.
    • Remove sharp objects from the surface.
    • Apply protective layers where necessary (except for mineral or aluminum-coated membranes).

    Proper protection ensures long-term durability.

  • Can I apply aluminium coated or mineral coated bituminous waterproofing membranes as single layer?

If the roof slope is 5% or less, at least two layers are recommended. If the slope is greater than 5% and the structure is outside freezing zones, a single 4 mm polyester-reinforced membrane may be sufficient.

  • What is the reason that the waterproofing membrane rolls are generally 10 metre length?

Standard roll sizes (1 m width and 10–15 m length) allow easier transportation, handling, and installation efficiency.

  • What side of the bituminous waterproofing membranes should be connected to surface during the application?

For mineral or aluminum-coated membranes, the non-coated side is bonded to the surface. For other membranes, the outer side of the roll is typically the bonding side.

  • Is walking allowed on mineral coated bituminous waterproofing membranes?

Occasional walking for maintenance is allowed. Flat-soled shoes should be worn and caution exercised to avoid damage.

  • Is it possible to provide waterproofing insulation by making the application of ceramic or mosaic?

No. Ceramic or mosaic tiles are finishing materials, not waterproofing materials. A dedicated waterproofing layer must be applied beneath them.

  • Is it possible to make the application of waterproofing membranes in all climate conditions?

Application should be carried out in dry weather conditions. The surface must be dry, and ambient temperature should generally be above +5°C.

  • What sort of application should be made to avoid the crushing of the bituminous waterproofing membranes?

The number and thickness of membrane layers must be determined according to soil pressure and hydrostatic pressure in compliance with relevant standards (such as TS 11758-2). System design should be performed by professionals.

  • How to store the bituminous waterproofing membranes?
    • Store upright on a flat surface.
    • Do not stack rolls.
    • Keep away from heat sources.
    • Protect from frost and direct sunlight.
    • Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • What should be made a point of choosing the bituminous waterproofing membranes?

    Selection should consider:

    • Climate conditions
    • Building type and structure
    • Water exposure level
    • Quality certifications (TSE, CE, etc.)

Using certified, high-quality products prevents long-term damage and additional repair costs.

  • Can I apply it by myself or get them applied by acquaintance applicators?

Professional inspection and application by specialized waterproofing companies is strongly recommended to ensure system performance and warranty validity.

  • Is waterproofing necessary if it seems no ground water on the soil?

Yes. Even without visible groundwater, soil moisture and surface water can cause long-term foundation damage.

  • Can bituminous waterproofing membranes be applied for interior house and flat?

Yes. Bituminous membranes are commonly used in interior wet areas such as bathrooms and kitchens.

  • Can bituminous waterproofing membranes lay under the tiles on the roofs?

Yes. Installing membranes beneath roof tiles provides additional protection against wind-driven rain, dust, and leakage.

  • Is hand or skin contact with bituminous waterproofing membranes hazardous?

Under normal conditions, bituminous membranes are not hazardous to touch and do not pose health risks.
